Access Standard
As part of the Framework of Standards we support the Public Services Quality Group Access Standard and advocate its use across the sector if applicable. The Access Standard sets out a series of clear guidelines and best practice principles on access to archive collections and repositories.
The guidelines cut across the wide range of issues that impact on accessibility to archives. These include:
- listening and responding to users and non-users in the community
- provision of intellectual access to the catalogues and the records
- ensuring transparency of service provision
- provision of physical access to the building
Although the Access Standard was produced with public sector archives in mind, because they have a statutory duty to provide public access, it is a useful guide for any archive repository seeking to assess and improve access provision. Further information on the Access Standard is provided on the National Council on Archives website.
