The National Archives

Standards schemes and frameworks help archives to manage and improve their efficiency and effectiveness through external validation, and by identifying good practice. They also enable The National Archives to fulfil its statutory functions relating to approving places of deposit.

As part of our new leadership role we are engaging with the sector to support its strategic development. This will be underpinned by a new Archives Accreditation Standard, to be introduced in 2013. It is intended that this will replace the current Standard for Record Repositories, Framework of Standards, Self Assessment and the Inspection regime. Learn more about the standard and get involved in its development.

In the meantime we will continue to use The National Archives' Standard for Record Repositories as the basis of our current work. This is supported by our framework of standards, which covers a wider range of more specialised guidance and best practice that may not be relevant to every repository.
