The National Archives takes pride in the integrity and condition of our collection. Please read and accept our terms and conditions before ordering documents:

  • The reading rooms are designated quiet zones. Respect the right of other readers to research in a quiet environment.
  • Switch all equipment to silent mode (including mobile phones, laptops, cameras).
  • Disable all camera flash functions.
  • You must not bend, fold, untag, overhang, separate, mark or damage any document in any way.
  • If you wish to either photograph or have a copy made from a document you must take the whole document with you, not just the part that you wish to copy.
  • You must use the available preservation equipment to ensure that the documents are not damaged in any way.
  • If approached by a member of staff regarding a breach of any of the above points you must do as they ask.

If you are unsure of any procedures please ask a member of staff for advice before proceeding.

If you do not follow these rules we may remove your right to use the records.
