Draft entry. Folios 130-134. Report of visit to Southwell Union workhouse by Robert Weale, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board.
The main defect is the lack of a dining room, but there is no chance of this being provided. Also the sick wards are in the main part of the Workhouse, and the Infectious Wards are small. The only bathroom for the receiving wards is on the female side. It is suggested that a bath should be provided adjoining the male receiving ward. The school is tolerably well conducted. There is an urgent need for a ward for female vagrants. The Visiting Committee need to visit more frequently.
There are no Roman Catholic or Dissenting inmates.
Mary Tryner, referred to in previous inspector’s report, is still in the workhouse in the same condition. The medical officer refused to certify the necessity for her to go to the Asylum.
Copy of earlier inspector’s report by Mr Manwaring [Mainwaring] dated 30 November 1863.
