Census advisory panel

We have established an independent panel to advise us on the development of the service for the 1901 census online service and the digitisation of other censuses. From 5 September 2002 the 1901 census advisory panel became the Online advisory panel.

Membership of the panel

The panel should represent the main existing user communities for released census returns. Membership will be by invitation from The National Archives. Current membership is drawn from:

  • The National Archives
  • Family Records Centre (FRC)
  • Defence and Evaluation Research Agency (DERA)
  • Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS)
  • Society of Genealogists (SOG)
  • Guild of One-Name Studies (GoONs)
  • Association of Genealogists and Record Agents (AGRA)
  • British Association for Local History (BALH)
  • University of Essex
  • Census professional researcher

Purpose of the panel

  • To advise The National Archives and its partner, the DERA on matters of concern to users
  • To provide informed advice regarding the development of the service
  • To act as a communications channel between The National Archives, DERA and the user communities
  • To provide an independent assessment on specific elements of the 1901 service as they are developed

Communication of information

To preserve the confidentiality of members, and to ensure the accuracy of public information, the minutes of the meeting should form the basis for any wider communication. Names of panel members will be shown on minutes.
