Response

There are 1185 Treasury records at TNA that are closed on our online catalogue, Discovery. You can find these files through the following search on Discovery. This search has filtered out the retained and open Treasury files.

This search breaks down into 418 pieces (whole records) and 767 items (parts of records). This includes records that were transferred from HM Treasury to TNA already closed under the PRA (20 to 30 year closures), Lord Chancellor’s Instruments (LCI), and various exemptions under the FOI Act. The expiration dates of closure periods for each record are available on their related catalogue description.

The 1185 closed Treasury records at TNA also includes records that have been reclosed at TNA whilst access is under review. This includes 263 reclosed Treasury records.

The term “reclosure” relates to open records at TNA which were withdrawn from public access temporarily. Further information on this can be found here.

In addition, we have recently taken delivery of 2,641 records that were previously retained by HM Treasury. These are currently being processed but include 1,275 records that will be open and 1,366 records that are now closed under FOIA exemptions.

The total number of Treasury files at TNA which have not yet been released is therefore 3826.
