FOI request reference: F0049645
Publication date: August 2017

Request

Having visited The National Archives several times since the start of this year and speaking to staff, I would like to ask for several pieces of information under the Freedom of Information Act.

1. What percentage of documents are delivered to customers in the reading room on time and what is the average missed targets in repositories.
2. How many staff have left The National Archives since January through retirement, natural wastage and redundancy.
3. How many staff are predicted to leave through retirement, natural wastage and redundancy before the end of the year.
4. From January how many new posts have been filled without going through the process of fair and open competition.

Outcome

Successful

Response

For clarity, we have broken down your request and provided answers directly under each of your questions, as detailed below:-

1. What percentage of documents are delivered to customers in the reading room on time and what is the average missed targets in repositories.

This information for the financial years 2010-11 to 2017-18 is published on the Transparency pages of The National Archives website and can be viewed via the following link:-

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/our-role/transparency/our-public-services/

2. How many staff have left The National Archives since January through retirement, natural wastage and redundancy.

36 staff have left between 1 January and 27 July 2017.

3. How many staff are predicted to leave through retirement, natural wastage and redundancy before the end of the year.

We are unable to predict the number of staff who will leave before the end of the year; however at the time your request was received we knew of 6 staff members leaving on or after 28 July 2017.

4. From January how many new posts have been filled without going through the process of fair and open competition.

10 posts on Limited Period Appointments (i.e. temporary appointments, as defined by the Civil Service Recruitment Principles).

Please note that for questions 2-3, the term “natural wastage” is taken to mean resignations or transfers to other government departments, and the term “redundancy” is taken to mean both compulsory and voluntary redundancy.
