Administrative / biographical background:

The Loyal Lodge of Freemasons was established in Barnstaple in 1783, after an earlier lodge, founded in 1762, closed in 1776. Its official number was originally 453, but it was assigned different numbers at various times until 1862, when the present number, 251, was adopted. The first meetings were held at the Globe Inn in Queen Street, but as the membership expanded a number of other venues were used. In 1868, the lodge moved to Queen Anne's Walk (at present occupied by Barnstaple Heritage Centre), where it stayed until moving to Trafalgar Lawn in the Newport area of Barnstaple in 1966. For a published historical account of the lodge, see T Pook, History of the Loyal Lodge of Freemasons, No. 251, Barnstaple, 1783-1933
