Administrative / biographical background: |
The Barnstaple Slums and Housing Conditions Committee, an unofficial Committee of concerned local people chaired by Dr. Richard Harper, presented an interim report entitled 'Your beautiful town' at Christmas 1944 (Ref. NDA PD900 BAR) The Photographs listed here were taken by Dr Harper c.1945-1946. In 1946, the Committee submitted evidence and a petition to the Ministry of Health, with 'a large volume of photographs, illustrating bad housing conditions in the Borough'. At this time, the Borough had 923 applicants for Council housing and 727 houses were scheduled for demolition. (Ref. 2654A - 2/C125, Housing Committee minutes 1946) |
