(2) Roger Baldewyne

 

One furlong of land at Estgodyscote which lies between the land of Westgodyscote and the fountain of La Pytte. To hold for 20 years.

 

Rent: 4/-, at Michaelmas and Easter, in equal portions, for all service, save the royal service, and suit at Michaelmas and Easter, at La Bryge; and if he falls into the mercy of the court he shall be quit for 3d fine; and save for two free boon-works - ploughing and reaping once each yearly. And if he dies, or wishes to give up the land, he shall pay 6d. And at the end of 20 years the land shall return to the said Henry.

 

Clause of warranty.

 

Witnesses: John de Eslegh', Richard de Antysford, Laurence Asze, Arnulph de Hoke, and Godfrey de Slad' and others. [Apparently added as an afterthought]: 'Gilbert Ay and Gilbert de la Hole and saving the corn growing on the land in the last year [?"anna"] of the said Roger.'

 

Date (at beginning of document): on the feast of St. John the Baptist, 14 Edward.

 

Seal missing.

 

The places named cannot be identified with certainty, but there is an Escot and a Westcott in the parish of Talaton.
