Diaries (which include sketches) of expeditions to the Upper Nile between 1861 and 1873. Volume 2 includes notes on hunting in Ceylon 1844-53. Cash book for 1869. Observations taken in Central Africa from 1860 - 1873. Various papers and letters to John Petherick (1863) and Mr Kerrison (1873). Geographical subject headings: 1) SRI LANKA. 2) AFRICA, River Nile. 3) EGYPT. 4) SUDAN.

Physical condition: The bound diaries are in good condition.
Restrictions on use:

Photocopying subject to the condition of each item and completion of an 'application for copies' form. No reproduction or publication of the diaries without permission of the Baker family, applications for such permission should be made to the Society's Archivist, not to the family.

Access conditions:

Access is via the Society's Foyle Reading Room and is free to Members and Fellows of the Society and to those in formal education (proof of educational status required e.g. a student/staff card or formal letter of introduction from your institution). For all other visitors a & #163;10 daily access fee applies. All visitors are required to provide personal i.d. such as a driving licence or passport. Access to the diaries is subject to agreement of the Baker family, applications for permission to view this material should be made to the Society's Archivist, not to the family.

The diaries were presented to the RGS by Mr REH Bailey in 1970.
