This Section represents the contents of Hinton's bulky folders of 'Miscellaneous correspondence' 1969-83, and of his 'Daily carbons' 1978-83.

Most of Hinton's correspondence on research, advisory committees, institutions, publications and other activities was kept with the related material and has been left in place in the appropriate Sections of the collection.

The 'Miscellaneous correspondence' folders bore a note by Mrs. Ellis, 'Examined by Lord Hinton' with dates in December 1981 and April 1982, and also a note that 'From time to time all Lord Hinton's files have been reduced of unnecessary papers'. This process was evidently draconian, but the remaining papers are to be understood as Hinton's considered view of what was of interest or value to him.

As with material elsewhere in the collection, many of the documents bear manuscript notes and comments added by Hinton, perhaps during his reviews of his papers. These remarks are of historical, technical or personal interest, as are the biographical recollections and personal news often included in the copies of letters to old friends and colleagues sent for Christmas, birthdays or other anniversaries.

The 'Daily carbons' have been left intact at CSAC 116.7.86/J.80-J.84 since much of their interest lies in the record they afford of Hinton's total activity over a given period and at the very end of his career.
