Title: DEVEREUX PAPERS
Description:

Correspondence and Papers, together with letters-patent, deeds, accompts and other documents, of the family of Devereux, chiefly of Walter Devereux, 2nd Viscount Hereford (1558) and 1st Earl of Essex (1572, died 22 Sept., 1576), Robert, his son, 2nd Earl of Essex, Queen Elizabeth's Favourite (beheaded 25 Feb., 1601), and Robert, his grandson, 3rd and last Earl of Essex, the Parliamentary General (died 14 Sept., 1646).

The first Earl's papers mostly relate to his expedition into Ireland, as Captain General and Governor of Ulster, in 1573; the second Earl's relate, among other matters, to his expedition to Cadiz in 1596, his debts to the Queen, etc.; the third Earl's relate almost entirely to private business.

The deeds, etc., which are chronologically arranged in boxes, go back in date to the 14th century.

Note:

This catalogue is a summary of the documents held at Longleat, rather than a full description. The Finding Aid (Index) contains entries for the whole collection and therefore will give references for entries that may not appear in files on-screen.

Custodial history:

At the death of the 3rd Essex in 1646 without issue, the collection, together with the Dudley Papers (see Longleat House Catalogue DU), passed to his sister and co-heir Frances Seymour, Marchioness of Hertford (Duchess of Somerset 1660). The latter died in 1674, and both the Dudley and Devereux Papers, together with the Seymour Papers, then came into the possession of her executor Thomas Thynne (cr. Viscount Weymouth 1682), who had married her grand-daughter Lady Frances Finch, daughter of Heneage, 2nd Earl of Winchelsea, and Lady Mary Seymour.
