The Wachesham manor in Culpho, with its appurtenances in Tuddenham, Grundisburgh and Playford, was in 1316 granted by the feoffee of Sir John de Wachesham to his widow Denise and his son and heir Thomas, with remainders to Thomas's brothers John and Edmund. From Thomas the manor passed to his son and heir John who sold it to Roger de Wolferston in 1363. It remained in the Wolferston family at least until 1495 but by 1529 had passed to Sir Richard Brooke, and by 1609 to Sir Michael Stanhope.[Copinger, Suffolk, iii, 35-7]
