Administrative / biographical background:

A charter at the Castle, dated 1 Dec. 1552 (GC 4769), records the conveyance of the manor of 'Essendon' from Henry Carey, esquire, to John Croke. Thomas de St. Andrew had a free holding in Ashendon in 1213 and was succeeded by Henry de St. Andrew, lord in 1236. In 1255 the manor belonged to another Thomas, possibly the same as the Thomas who in 1276 was accused of having obstructed the king's highway and as the Thomas son of Henry who is one of the parties in the charter below. He was succeeded by his son Walter who was lord 1284-1316. A John de St. Andrew was active in 1267.[VCH Bucks. iv. 4.]
