Administrative / biographical background:

Newington was a manor of the Berkeleys of Dursley. [Barkly, 248-69; CCR 1392-6, 190.] It was held at his death by Sir Henry de Berkeley (d. 1287), whose widow Joan held it in dower. Henry's son and heir William did homage in 1291 and died in 1300 leaving a son and heir John, who did homage in 1314. He was holding Newington in 1316 and entailed it, with Dursley and other lands, in 1332. He died in 1349 and his son and heir Sir Nicholas settled it on himself and his wife Cecilia, daughter and heir of William de la More of Oldland in Bitton; Nicholas died without issue in 1382 and Cecilia in 1394, and thereafter the manor passed to Nicholas's sister Maud Cauntelo. Maud died in 1402 and her heir was her granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Robert Cauntelo of Heddington (Wilts.), who married Richard Cheddar in 1403. On Richard's death in 1437 the lands of his wife's inheritance passed to his daughter Jane, wife of Thomas Wyke, while the Cheddar lands passed to Richard's brother. [Hist of parl. 1386-1421, i, 537-8; CIPM xv, nos, 687-8; CPR 1381-5, 228; CCR 1392-6, 190.] See also below, BCM/F/1/5/37 [SC 474]
