Administrative / biographical background:

The manor was granted in 1200 by the king to Roger Bigod, earl of Norfolk (d. 1221), and it acquired its alias Mawney (also used as a suffix) from its temporary possession by Walter Lord Mauny, second husband of Margaret Marshal. [VCH Essex, vii. 64-5.] It was allotted to John (II) de Segrave and Margaret in the division of 1338 (above, BCM/D/7/1/1 [GC 2929]), but it was not mentioned in Segrave's inquisition post mortem. It was part of the jointure of the duchess Elizabeth in 1476, and in 1484 was granted by William de Berkeley to Richard III.
