The castle of Walton, now swallowed by the sea off Felixstowe and often confused with Walton-on-the-Naze (Essex), played a vital role in the coup by Isabel and Mortimer in 1326 when, in the hands of Thomas of Brotherton, it offered a safe landing place for the invasion. It was held by the countess Mary in dower until 1362.
