Administrative / biographical background:

See below, p. 784, Dunsthorpe, for a general discussion of the family's Lincolnshire lands. Gilbert de Segrave acquired 100s. worth of land, 'viz. 13 bovates', in Barton from Henry de Longchamp, which he then granted to Richard de Welington at a rent of a pair of gold spurs or 6d. a year. [BL Harl. MS 4748 f. 21d.] The Segrave Cartulary notes that it was alienated for part of a knight's service, which continued, and that it was held by Thornton Abbey as a quarter of a fee. [BL Harl. MS 4748 ff. 2,21d.] The rent in the charter below is not mentioned later. [Barton-upon-Humber is mentioned among the lands of the duchess Katherine in Yorks. and Lincs. in 1475 (above, BCM/D/1/1/55 [GMR 36]), but she held it as the widow of Viscount Beaumont.]
