Administrative / biographical background:

A messuage there, by 1343 leased at 18s. a year, was often associated with the £17 rent from Wisbech (Cambs.) and with the manor of Fenstanton (Hunts.). The Segrave Cartulary has the grant of the 'manor' of Chatteris by Gilbert Pecche to Nicholas de Segrave and his wife Maud, [The cartulary records grants of the manor by Gilbert Pecche and his wife Joan to John le Fleming and his wife Agnes for their lives, and by Gilbert son of Hamon Pecche to Nicholas de Segrave and his wife Maud, along with quitclaims by Fleming to the Segraves and by Fleming's widow Agnes and Gilbert's widow Joan to John de Segrave. Nicholas and Maud were also granted a plot of land by William le Moyne: BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 24.], but while the presence of a court roll (below, BCM/D/5/5/3 [GCR 187]) in the muniments suggests a manor the family's interest seems never to have amounted to more than the messuage and rent. See below, p. 723, Wisbech.
