Administrative / biographical background:

A knight's fee in Wymeswold and Welby was granted to Stephen (I) de Segrave by Maurice le Butler. [BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 16d.] Nicholas, younger son of Nicholas Lord Segrave (d. 1295), married Alice de Armenters, widow of Gerard de Lisle (d. 1287); their daughter and heir Maud died without issue in 1335, when their acquisitions would have reverted to John Lord Segrave. This was one of the minor holdings mentioned in the 1343-4 settlement and it occurs again as part of the same settlement in 1353 and 1399.
