Lands in Welby, now a deserted village 2 miles north-west of Melton Mowbray, were granted to Stephen (1) de Segrave by the abbeys of Garendon and Leicester and by Lenton Priory, and Stephen granted 1 carucate of land and a mill to Leicester Abbey in exchange for lands in Seagrave. [Stephen was granted 1 carcucate of land held of Lenton Priory, and a knight's fee in Wymeswold and Welby by Maurice le Botyle: BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 16d.] Rents of £4 5s. 10d. are mentioned in the inquisition of 1295. Welby was one of the holdings granted to Stephen (II) de Segrave and Alice by his father John in Jan. 1314, and rents of £4 11s. 1½d. held in jointure were mentioned in Stephen's inquisition of 1325. It is one of the few holdings not held in jointure by Margaret Marshal in John's inquisition of 1353, but is not later mentioned separately in the muniments.
