The following charters may refer to Burton Lazars but Burton-on-the-Wolds is more likely because of Stephen's holding in Cotes and Prestwold (below, BCM/D/5/19/1 [GC 416]), the fields of which extended into Burton-on-the-Wolds. A rent of 2s. in Burton paid by the Cistercian abbey of Garendon was granted to Stephen by Thomas Despenser in free marriage with his daughter Rose. [BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 11; VCH Leics. ii. 5.] Rents from Burton 'Grange' were paid to Seagrave manor in 1325. |
