Stephen de Segrave was granted lands in Smisby, among other holdings, by Hugh Daubeney, earl of Arundel, as a quarter of a fee in exchange for all the holdings in Mountsorrel, Barrow and Quorndon (Leics.) which Arundel had previously given to Stephen. [BL Harl. MS 4748 f. 20.] Smisby lay very close to the Leicestershire border and in the 1343-4 settlement and later it was associated with a group of neighbouring Leicestershire holdings rather than with Bretby.
