Administrative / biographical background:

Lands in Ashbourne, Offcote, Underwood and Hognaston were granted to Gilbert de Segrave (d. 1254) by William de Ferrers, earl of Derby. [BL Harl. MS 4748, f. 19d.] Ferrers had also granted land in nearby Matlock (below) to Stephen de Segrave and, as the Matlock lands are not heard of later in Segrave hands, the two may have been exchanged. Ashbourne was granted by Nicholas (d. 1295) to his younger son Henry, who had died without issue by Jan. 1318 when they reverted to the main line and were settled by John (I) on Stephen and Alice. [At his death in 1325 Stephen was holding jointly with Alice lands in Ashbourne, Underwood and Hognaston, with 100 a. of land and a sheepcote called Beggerhowe in Brassington, and holdings in Parwich (Peverwyk), Walton and Coton, which had been held by Henry.] Alice was alive in 1338 but had evidently died by June 1343 when the lands were granted to feoffees, and by December they were held by Stephen, a cousin of the then lord John (II). They appear in both inquisitions post mortem of 1399 but not later. Ullastone and Methley are lost settlements in the parish of Offcote and Underwood, Ullastone lying near the field of Mire Leach (le Murelache).
