Administrative / biographical background: |
William Edleston, the second son of Robert Edleston, established the Firm in 1848. They were pioneers in the blanket and South American long wool trade, and also specialised in pure camel hair and alpaca clothes. Robert Edleston had accumulated considerable property by the time of his death in 1865. His property was administered after his death by means of the creation of the Robert Edleston Trust, which included the woollen mill, though not the woollen business, which became the subject of a separate Trust, the Administrators of William Edleston, after the death of his son, William. The business was carried on by William's three brothers, the Revd Dr Joseph, Robert and Dickinson Edleston, and then by their descendants with a general manager. The business had a large home trade, being contractors to the Admiralty and War Office, and their goods were also shipped to every corner of the world. It became a limited company in 1939. It came to concentrate on supplying top European fashion houses with high-class mohair and cashmere accessories and textiles. When these records were deposited in 1991, the firm was the William Edleston Division of Moorbrook Textiles Ltd.
