Administrative / biographical background:

The Firm had a large textile business at Wainstalls Mill from 1821 until 1951.

A gravestone recording the deaths of seven of the mill's orphan employees, recruited from Liverpool, can be seen in the graveyard of Luddenden Dean Methodist Chapel. These were largely "imported" from Liverpool because of a labour shortage. There were roughly 100 girls and 1 boy. The children lived in homes run by foster parents and the firm provided food and clothes. They worked 10 hours a day but only received a few pence pocket money. Many stayed in the area
