Administrative / biographical background: |
The Fielden family had been engaged in the worsted textile trade for generations prior to Joshua Fielden changing to the cotton trade in 1782. By 1803, he left the day to day running of the business to his 3 elder sons, Samuel, Joshua and John, and when he died in 1811, the firm's name was changed to Fielden Brothers, with James and Thomas, the 2 younger sons also being brought into the partnership. By 1833, their assets stood at £300,000, and by 1850, they were employing 1700 factory hands at their 11 Todmorden Mills (including Waterside, Robinwood, Lumbutts, Jumb, Smithy Holme, Waterstalls, Causeway and Dobroyd), and another 200 at their mill in Mytholmroyd. In 1889, they became Fielden Brothers Ltd. and in 1956 a subsidiary "Waterside Plastics Ltd." was established. In 1966, Fielden Brothers Ltd. changed its name to Waterside Plastics Ltd. The Fieldens were Todmorden's largest employers and they also contributed to the town's development in many other ways. Waterside Mill had its own gas works from 1830, the first to be established by a private company, and the surplus gas was sold to houses near the mill. John Fielden as a director of the Leeds to Manchester Railway helped ensure that the railway came through Todmorden, close to Waterside Mill. The family built the splendid Unitarian Church, opened in 1869, and paid for the building of the Town Hall. The political importance of John Fielden MP, as a radical reformer, a supporter of universal manhood suffrage, promoter of the 10 Hours Act of 1847, and opponent of the 1834 New Poor Law Act is widely recognised. |
