Administrative / biographical background: |
J.C. Bottomley was born in 1830 and began business as a drysalter in Brighouse in 1851. Later he produced dyers chemicals. Paint manufacture began in 1906. In 1910 Arthur Dawson and Louis Emerson commenced business as aniline dyestuffs merchants at Longroyd Bridge, Huddersfield. The two firms combined in 1919 and formed a private limited company called J.C. Bottomley and Emerson Ltd. The manufacture of dyestuffs started at Brighouse, while the expansion of the sales at Huddersfield entailed the acquisition of new premises. It has not proved possible to divide the material into separate sections for Brighouse and Huddersfield. BO/6 and BO/7 contain records from both firms, while the Brighouse firm seems to have had a supervisory function over the sales operation at Huddersfield, as the parent company |
