The first Sir James Hill was born at Harden, the son of Mr William Hill, a wool merchant. In 1875 he entered into a business partnership with a Mr John Reddihough. In 1891 he established his own business, initially importing wool and then adding woolcombing and topmaking to the business. Sir James Hill was one of the leading textile magnates of the period. In addition to his business interests in textiles he was the first chairman of the Bradford and District Newspaper Company Limited in 1898 and in 1909 became one of two partners who owned The Yorkshire Observer. Sir James Hill also held public office, being a Mayor of Bradford in 1908 and representing Bradford Central as its MP for 3 years from 1916. He received a Baronetcy in 1916 and was made a Freeman of the City of Bradford in 1921.

 

His two sons Albert Hill and Arthur James Hill were taken into partnership. In 1922 the firm was incorporated into a Limited Company under the title Sir James Hill and Sons Limited The eldest son, Arthur James Hill died in 1935, and Sir James himself a year later in 1936. He was succeeded in turn by his son Sir Albert Hill, the second Sir James Hill and Sir James Frederick Hill.

 

The Sir James Hill group consisted of the following constituent firms:

 

Norman Wood and Son Limited were based at Crown Dyeworks, Birkshall Lane, Bradford. This firm was incorporated in 1934 and acquired by Sir James Hill and Son Limited in 1969.

 

Messrs Robinson and Peel were commission woolcombers based at Recta Mills, Factory Street, Dudley Hill, Bradford. This firm was incorporated in 1916 and acquired by Sir James Hill and Son Limited in 1961.

 

The Colonial Combing Company Limited were commission woolcombers based at Botany Mills and Melbourne Mills, Keighley. This firm was incorporated in 1911 and acquired by Sir James Hill and Son Limited in 1961.

 

Lana Limited were based at Woolston Warehouses, Bradford. This firm was incorporated in 1933, was bought by the Colonial Combing Company Limited in 1954 and acquired with this company by Sir James Hill and Son Limited in 1961.

 

Yorkshire Synthetic Fabrics Convertors Limited were based at Melbourne Mils, Dalton Lane, Keighley and formerly at 47 Grattan Road, Bradford and Mayfair Works, Sticker Lane, Bradford. The firm was incorporated in 1960.

 

In 1973 Sir James Hill and Sons Limited also branched out into the travel business by acquiring Taber Travel Limited The name of this firm was changed to James Hill Travel in 1978 and the travel section of the business was purchased by Pickford Travel in 1985.

 

The firm had strong links with Australia and New Zealand. Two firms, Sir James Hill and Sons (Australia) Limited and Sir James Hill (New Zealand) Limited were created in 1949 to act as buying agents in Australia and New Zealand. These activities had formerly been carried out by Mr N. Hill in Melbourne and Messrs H and R.H. Hill in New Zealand. The Australian Company was amalgamated with Booth Hill and Sons, Pty Limited in 1968.
