Administrative / biographical background: |
Although the earliest of these records date from 1833, it is believed that the business was founded in 1827, probably by Uriah Tinker who is described in a directory of 1838 as cabinet maker, and in the census returns of 1841 as joiner and cabinet maker. He was succeeded in the business by his son, John, in 1884, and he in turn was succeeded in 1897 by his son, Obadiah Denton Tinker. In 1932 George Redvers Tinker took over the business from his father. In 1976 the business passed out of the tinker family. From the earliest days the Tinkers made coffins as required; this became an increasingly important part of the business and is reflected in the records by a series of funeral books covering the period 1912 to 1975 |
