Description:

Jackson Collection. The collection was made by three generations of Sheffield surgeons, the last of whom was Arthur Jackson (d. 1914). It includes many papers of the Sheffield genealogist, William Swift (d.1874), and of Joseph Hunter (the latter purchased from the Phillipps sale in 1895), deeds and other original records, and a large number of pamphlets, handbills, guardbooks, newspaper cuttings and genealogical memoranda. None of the printed material (which includes a number of handbills of late 18th and early 19th century date, relating to elections, the workhouse, the scissor grinders' strike of 1790, and other local matters) is contained in the following list. Yorkshire: Register of deeds relating to Rawmarsh, Kilnhurst and York, c1200-1617, probably compiled for John Darley of York (104 entries). Register of deeds relating to estates acquired by John Vincent (d.1460), in Doncaster, Ravenfield, Sandal, Rotherham, 1320-1450 (78 entries).

 

Deeds relating to Sheffield, particularly the Ecclesall district, 1347-1759 (140 - many local families, particularly Bright and Clayton).
