J E Day (died 1989) spent his working life in the Locomotive Accountant's Department of the LNER, subsequently British Railways. He, and his colleague in the department, Leslie Smith, were both avid local historians, who made a notable contribution to research on the history of Doncaster. They were jointly responsible for the rescue of the substantial archive of Baxter and Somerville, solicitors of Doncaster. Including, History of Doncaster, notes and transcripts on Doncaster corporation and other subjects, including transcript of William Hurst's notes in his copy of Edward Miller's 'History of Doncaster'; architects, builders and engineer and surveyors, especially relating to Day's contribution to H E C Stapleton (ed.), 'A Skilful Master Builder' (Anelay of York, formerly of Doncaster), including a transcript of the account books of William Anelay 1798-1842; canals, navigations and waterways, especially relating to Day's contribution to the research of Charles Hadfield on British canals; railways, especially Day's history of the GNR railway engineering works and the centenary celebrations at the works in 1953; research notes from local newspapers 1756-1908; original records, including auction sale particulars (14) 1821-1907; manuscript plans of areas of Doncaster (3), early 19th century
