This was the leading legal partnership in Doncaster for almost a century up to its abrupt demise in the 1920s. Robert Baxter succeeded William Bright, solicitor and town clerk, in his practice in 1824 and rapidly became a lawyer of consequence, assisted by his involvement in railway business, although there is relatively little in the archive to reflect this. Information about the partnership is to be found in Andrew St George, 'A History of Norton Rose' (Cambridge, 1995). A copy is available in the departmental library of Doncaster Archives. The archives of the firm are very extensive and only the most substantial or the most significant are noticed here.
