Title: | W. Cecil Slingsby: The Dent Blanche climb, 1890 |
Description: |
Series Title: Original Letters Articles and letters relating to a guideless climb on the Dent Blanche in August 1890, undertaken by Slingsby, G.A. Solly and W.P. Haskett-Smith. An unexpected storm entailed a night on the slopes of the mountain, to the concern of other climbers who had remained in the valley. The party returned safely the next day, but there was criticism from some members of the AC that the climb had been undertaken in a foolhardy manner, and in spite of the threatening weather. Slingsby published an account of the expedition in the AJ Vol XV p404 (May 1891) as a response to this criticism, and a version of the ms of this article is among these papers. The material includes Slingsby's personal account of the climb, letters from various luminaries etc. Also a list of "dramatis personae" compiled by Young. Places: Alps |
