A keen climber, he enjoyed several other sports, particularly tennis, to the extent that he found himself in the Wimbledon singles semi-finals in 1901. He also won the mile race at the European Championships in Berlin in 1893. He claims that he entered as a joke, and that the rest of the field was comparatively poor.
