Details of 1883
Reference: 1883
Title: Burdett and Jones Families
Description:

Manorial documents, deeds, family and estate records of the Burdett and Jones families and their estates in Wiltshire. Berkshire, and elsewhere 1372-1890

Date: 1372-1953
Arrangement:

In the manorial section, the Western estates only are represented except for some miscellaneous items.

The title deeds of the Wiltshire and Berkshire lands together, which came into the hands of Sir Francis Burdett, fifth baronet, as grandson and heir of William Jones of Ramsbury in 1800, are listed first. Two groups have been distinguished, those referring to the whole Western estate and, following them, an estated carved out of this by Sir William Jones in 1740 and settled on his wife, Eleanor, in jointure. [Lodge House, Ramsbury High Park estate].

At the head of the Berkshire section, following Wiltshire, are entered the main estate deeds of the Choke family of Avington, the Berkshire section of whose lands were purchased by William Jones from Alexander Choke in 1673. Since these deeds refer to an estate unconnected with Ramsbury until this date, and since only the Berkshire properties mentioned in them formed part of the transaction in which they were surrendered as evidence, they have not been included in the combined main estate entry. Reference may be made to the excellent schedule of the Avington estate compiled for Samuel Jones in 1685 (Bundle 119).

The Northern estates centred upon Foremark in Repton (co. Derby) and the Western upon Ramsbury (co. Wilts.). The Burdett family were settled in the manor of Foremark in the 15th century, though their manor of Bramcote (co. Warwick) was the estate from which they took their title, Foremark was still considered the Burdetts' principal seat in 1933 (see Burke's Baronetage p. 42),
