Title: | Chippenham |
Description: |
The following items were collected by Harry Ross, a local historian, teacher, archaeologist and lecturer. He died in 1981 aged 77 and lived at Westbury. He had planned a book on the history of Westbury, as well as others on Saxon churches and folklore, none of which were completed. Until 1969 he was the Senior Resident Tutor in the Department of Extra-Mural Studies at Bristol University, and in this capacity he organised many adult education classes and formed several local history groups. The vast majority of the items in this collection relate to the Chippenham area. Many may have been acquired through a local solicitor and several appear to have been owned by Sir Gabriel Goldney. The collection includes sale particulars, manorial records, papers relating to the church of St. Andrew, Chippenham, First World War records and other miscellaneous documents. |
