CR 2017/D1/1 Copy letters patent of 29th March, 30 Henry VIII (1539), granting to Charles, Duke of Suffolk the reversion (on the death of Thomas (Manning) Bishop of Ipswich) of the manor of Monks Kirby with its hereditaments in (Little) Walton, Kirby, Street Ashton, Shatunford (sic), Marston Jabbett, Harborough Parva, Cosford, Brinklow, Newbold-on-Avon, Brockhurst, Newnham, Stretton, Gasnell (Easenhall), Pailton, Copston, Kreyke (Crick), Rugby, Long Lawford, Harborough Magna, Hale Spede (Alspath: Meriden), Wolvey, Willey, Cesters Over and Hopsford.

 

The document also refers to property in other counties which was granted to Thomas, Duke of Norfolk for life and then to the Duke of Suffolk and his heirs.

I [1624/5] from William Seymour Earl of Hertford and Lady Frances his wife to Sir Ralph Freeman of London kt. master of the Court of Requests, Sir Clement Cotterell of Wilford, Lincs. kt. and Bartine Houghe alias Woodkeeper of Goadby, Leics., yeoman, of the manor of Monks Kirby, the advowson of the vicarage, the tithes and all other hereditaments in Monks Kirby, Walton, Kirby, Street Ashton, Shatingford alias Stalingford (sic), Withybrook, Marston Jabbett, Brinklow, Brockhurst, Newnham, Copston, Halsepead alias Halspead [Alspath: Meriden], Cesters Over and Hopsford, all in Warwickshire and Sharnford, Leics., Signed by Henry Rooke, clerk of the rolls, c. 1753.

CR 2017/D1/8-12 Memoranda and letters as follows:

 

Memo concerning the passage of the manor of Monks Kirby by grant from the King (April, 7 James I) [1609] to the Earl of Hertford who sold it to Mary, Countess of Buckingham in the names of Sir Ralph Freeman and others in Dec. 22 James I [1624].

 

Memo concerning the grant of the rectory of Monks Kirby with the tithes and certain rents and lands in Monks Kirby and the neighbouring villages, formerly held by the Carthusians to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 37 Henry VIII [1545-1545/6]; concerning the lease now in the custody of the college dated 29 Henry VIII [1537-1537/8] of Bullocks Fields alias Walton Fields in Monks Kirby to the inhabitants of Pailton, both on account of this hamlet's lack of pasture and because the College's predecessors had so let the land for time out of mind; an extract of the lease of this land from the College to the inhabitants of 8th Dec. 1788 endorsed "Pailton Pasture Lease".

 

Letter from Stephen Whisson of Trinity College, Cambridge, to Sir Cordell [Firebrace], 27th July 1753, referring to the above memoranda and the age old custom of leasing the pasture to the inhabitants of Pailton.
