Administrative / biographical background: |
The Company was originally established, as a family concern in 1828, when John Jennings Snr, a local farmer whose father William Jennings was a maltster by trade, started brewing in Lorton, Cumbria, producing a home brew which came to be renowned beyond the local vicinity. As business increased a new brewery was required and a site beneath the Castle in Cockermouth, the main market town, which had its own water supply, was chosen. Brewing commenced on the Cockermouth site in 1874. In order to raise further money to cover new building costs a limited company, Jennings Brothers Ltd, was registered in July 1887 and shares were offered to the public. The property of the new company consisted of the two breweries, at Cockermouth and Lorton, three maltings and sixteen licensed houses. The capital of Jennings Brothers Ltd was increased during 1896 by the issue of mortgage debenture and preference shares with a view to increasing the tied trade. In 1906 a working agreement, terminated in 1923, was made with Messrs Joseph Dalzell's Parton and Harrington Breweries Ltd of Duke Street, Whitehaven (registered in March 1892) to take over the business of the Parton and Harrington Breweries carried on by Joseph Dalzell, together with the wine and spirit business of J F Dalzell and Co. The whole capital of Faulder's Brewery Co Ltd of Browfoot, Keswick, formed in 1883 to take over the brewery business of the late R Faulder of Keswick, was acquired in 1926. Brewing at this brewery stopped in 1927 and the company was voluntarily wound up in 1946 but several valuable licensed houses in the area had been obtained by this purchase. The Second World War brought shortages and rationing and the post-war years were also ones of struggling against shortages, rocketing costs and neglect because of the war. The 1950s were more fruitful with programmes of improvement and modernization to both licensed houses and the brewery being introduced. When the Carlisle State Management Brewery Scheme was wound up in 1972 Jennings purchased eight licensed houses, bringing their total to ninety wholly owned, all in Cumbria, with many other retail outlets for their cask-conditioned beer being used. In 1973 the Company fought off a take-over bid by Grand Metropolitan Ltd and has managed to remain an independent concern. In 2001 the outcome of a strategic review was announced, which involved an exit from operating managed houses in order to concentrate on its tenanted estate, its brands and its free trade business. The Company currently (2003) has an estate of over 100 pubs, in Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and the north east of England, and a product range of some dozen cask conditioned beers. |
