The divisions 'estate' and 'family' are for convenience only, since all the correspondence was found mixed together. Much personal material will be found, for example, in the letters of John Christian Curwen to Charles Udale, although primarily these gave instructions for estate management.

Most of the correspondence before c.1880 was deposited on 20th February 1964 through Professor Edward Hughes of Durham, who had borrowed it for use in his book "North Country Life in the 18th. Century," Vol.II, Cumberland and Westmorland. The later files came either from the Curwen Estates Office in Workington, or from Messrs Curwen & Co., solicitors of Workington.
