Administrative / biographical background:

Founded in 1850 as the Wesleyan Branch Society, and in 1855 merged with the Wesleyan Reformers, dividing in 1857 into North and South circuits, with the former based on Dock Street. It was known as the Monkwearmouth United Methodist Free Church Circuit, until in 1875 it became Dock Street U.M.F.C. Circuit and from 1907 Dock Street U.M. Circuit. In 1898 the Roker Avenue U.M.F.C Circuit was created out of part of Dock Street. In 1934 it became part of Sunderland North Circuit [MC.Su1].
