Administrative / biographical background:

Also known as Hebburn Hall Infirmary and Hebburn Hall Accident Infirmary. A lease of Hebburn Hall was taken in 1897 to convert it into an infirmary and it opened that year with 24 beds. It was maintained by voluntary subscriptions until 1948 when it was incorporated into the National Health Service. Beds were increased to 27 for general and ear, nose and throat surgery.
