Administrative / biographical background:

This hospital was opened in the mid 1860s as one of the growing number of specialist hospitals.

 

Although it was a flourishing concern for many years, by the 1940s it was beginning to suffer financial difficulties with its income from its paying patients not equalling its expenditure.

 

The Newcastle Regional Hospital Board decided that it should close at the end of March 1949 with the building at 11 St Mary's Place being used as a psychiatric outpatients clinic.
