Administrative / biographical background:

The Borough of Sunderland decided to open its own mental hospital in 1891 and set up the Borough Lunatic Asylum (later Borough Mental Hospital) Visiting Committee to govern it. The hospital opened in Silksworth Road, Ryhope in 1895. Responsibility for the hospital transferred in 1948 to the newly-created National Health Service. From that date it was governed by a Hospital Management Committee which was in turn responsible to the Newcastle Regional Hospital Board (Northern Regional Health Authority from 1974).
