The North East Durham Joint Smallpox Hospital Board was convened by the Local Government Board pursuant to Article 12(1) of the North East Durham Joint Smallpox Hospital Order 1904. It was responsible for the area of South Shields Rural, Jarrow Town, Sunderland Rural, Hebburn Urban, Felling Urban and Southwick Urban Councils. It first met on 14 December 1904, agreeing to take over Whiteleas Hospital From South Shields Town Council on 1 December 1908. The Board's final meeting was on 2 July 1948, after which it was absorbed by the newly created National Health Service. |
