Administrative / biographical background:

The Company of Merchant Adventurers was incorporated in 1547 as the direct successor of the Guild of Merchants founded in 1216 by a Charter of King John. The Company comprised the Boothmen (corn merchants) Drapers (woollen merchants) and Meriers (silk Merchants) and originally held its "Courts" in the Maison Dieu, Newcastle. Their earliest record dates from 1554.
