The Joiners ordinary of 1589 separated them from the Housecarpenters with whom they had co-operated as an incorporated body since 1579. Although separated, the Joiners continued to work with the Housecarpenters to protect their monopoly on the trade in the Newcastle area.

Their first meeting house was the Pilgrims Gateway until its demolition in 1802 when a new meeting house was built in the High Friar Street which was itself demolished in 1901.

The guild eventually came to include cabinet makers as well as joiners
