Administrative / biographical background:

The first trade company in Gateshead received a charter from the Bishop of Durham in 1559, probably as a defence against the power of the Newcastle guilds. The company of drapers, tailors, mercers, hardwaremen, coopers and chandlers (incorporated in 1595) was the most powerful guild in Gateshead. It obtained a new charter from Cromwell in 1658 but, since this was worthless after the Restoration, again asked for a new charter from the Bishop of Durham in September 1661.
