Incorporated Company of Coopers, Newcastle

Accessions 432 and 782

The Coopers Company of Newcastle date from an ordinary of 20 January 1426. All Turners and Pulleymakers were to be bound by the same ordinary. A later ordinary dated 10 September 1575 consolidated the Coopers, Pulleymakers and Turners with the Ropemakers. The Ropemakers later separated from the Company in 1648.

The Coopers Company met at Manors from about 1650. Prior to 1791, they met at the Watergate, on the Sandhill. During the later nineteenth century they met at taverns (eg The Three Indian Kings, The Imperial Hotel in the Cloth Market). During the 1920s and 30s, the Company met at the Guildhall, in the Mayor's Chambers.
